James .R. Dixon Johnny Matchstick links back to the "Wrays of light" in the early 60's with this irresistible rockabilly, Lux Interior rumble. Link Wray formed his own record company in his brothers chicken house after corperate radio banned his instrumental "Rumble" & this first D.I.Y. garage single again gives the middle finger to corporate control & manipulation of musical integrity. Well done Johnny , delicious single. HIT BUY! Favorite track: Let Me Tell You About My Baby.

For the A side track I recorded it mostly live, direct to my 4 track reel to reel tape machine. Tom and I started the session in the morning, did a few takes, and finished by early afternoon. It was a 60's style set up for this one. I had everything mic'd up individually in the room. Tom and his bass were in the corner, I was on my drums on the other side of the room with my guitar. I had my guitar amp faced into the closet surrounded by towels and other sound deadening materials to prevent some bleed. We got the levels sounding right in the room, then did a few takes. I tend to like live recordings rather than very processed overdubbed ones for their honest sound.
The vocals were overdubbed in a separate session. For this, I was trying different things with echo. I love the 50's era sounding echo chambers. In specific some of the echo heard on some of the older Chess Records catalog. For this I messed around with sending the vocal track through a speaker placed in my tiled bathroom at a specific angle, placing another mic to capture the sound on the other end of the bathroom. I had two mics picking up the vox, one going through this set up, the other going direct in. I took the final wet and dry tracks and blended them together for the vocal...

These tracks were mastered by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic Sound Studios in Los Angeles, CA
